galleria artesilva is pleased to announce this exhibition by Christiane Beer, an artist also presented on the occasion of MiArt 2009 within MIRAGGI. Un dialogo d’arte tra fiera e città, whose work, installed at the invitation of the Assessorato all’Arredo, Decoro Urbano e Verde of the City of Milan in piazza San Carlo, now stands in the garden of Villa Panza di Biumo in Varese.
Christiane Beer’s work can be placed within the strictest minimalism, and her works present themselves to whoever looks at them as impenetrable and at times undecipherable white surfaces, as distant places of possibility and of poetry. Her sculptures, both wall-mounted and floor-standing, made up of several elements set beside one another and executed in cement or in ceramic, as Francesca Pini notes in a recent text, “hanno una precisione matematica, non derivata però da calcoli a tavolino delle proporzioni, ma sgorgata da una sua interna e inconsapevole geometria mentale che, spesso, diventa però ricerca spasmodica di un angolo perfetto”. This sort of mental geometry and this desire of hers to govern form through knowledge lead Christiane Beer to work in groups of works: through variation the artist has the possibility of investigating in depth such elements as lines, forms and spaces. This is the case with a series of four white ceramic panels recently presented in a context of great prestige such as the art space of the Bocconi University in Milan, and it is also the case with the works that will be shown in this exhibition, made in collaboration with the artist. These extremely seductive works, silent but strongly present, sum up in full what Beer means by making art and sculpture today. As she herself explains, to make sculpture means “creare una posizione, stando nelle circostanze storiche, ma anche esperienza e pensiero soggettivo. Una posizione che oscilla tra immaginazione classica e romantica. Da una parte l’attrazione per l’idea, l’astrazione, la verità, il nulla, la struttura… e dall’altra l’esperienza diretta, la soggettività, fisicità, sensualità…”.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue produced for the occasion.
Christiane Beer was born in Plauen in Saxony in 1965.
She studied sculpture with Giuseppe Spagnulo at the Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenen Künste in Stuttgart, where she took her diploma in 1986. In 1993 she won a scholarship from the Ministry of Baden-Württemberg and moved to Milan, where she remained until 1994. In 1999 she again won a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture of Baden-Württenberg and in 2002 a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture of Bavaria. Among her main recent solo exhibitions are those at the Galleria Sophien-Edition, Berlin, the Galleria Mitten, Wassemburg, the Galleria Gedok-Galerie, Stuttgart, and the Galleria Grossetti Arte Contemporanea, Milan.
